Goal setting is a widely-used technique in sport coaching. Many mnemonics and acronyms have been suggested to follow when setting goals, but guidelines on the process of goal setting with athletes have often lacked clarity. In this interactive talk, Dr Matthew Bird and Dr Patricia Jackman from the University of Lincoln, UK will share their recent research on goal setting in sport psychology and outline different stages and steps that coaches can consider when setting goals with their athletes.
Bios
Dr Patricia Jackman is an Associate Professor in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Lincoln, UK. Her research in sport focuses on psychological states underlying excellent performance (e.g., flow), performance under pressure, self-regulation and goal setting. Dr Jackman is a Specialist in Applied Sport Psychology (SASP-FEPSAC) and provides sport psychology services to athletes, coaches, parents, and athletes from grassroots to international levels.
Dr Matthew Bird is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Lincoln, UK. He is interested in professional practice research and his recent investigations have focused on performance profiling as an assessment and intervention, case conceptualisation in sport psychology, and the processes of delivering effective goal setting. Dr Bird is an Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) - Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC). He provides sport psychology support to a wide number of athletes across various levels.
